A recent email from Myrn prompted a trip to the vending machine for what I initially thought was counterfeit dew. The official mountain dew site mentions nothing about the new logo, but a Google search reveals a logo makeover in the works. It's not limited to dew either, and there's already some great parodies on the new Pepsi logo. The change can only be interpreted as another step closer to Idiocracy.

I decided to document the most recent example for posterity and eagerly await his response, or at least hope it gets picked up on Google for his next vain Google search. As you can tell I get a bit animated when confronted with all the caps and excessive punctuation. Mix in arrogance and I become a full-on jerk.
Waking up to beeping UPS batteries at 4:49am is not pleasant, especially when you look outside and see the bright flashing of light that signifies the death of multiple transformers (the capacitor type, not the transforming alien robots). The 17 hour outage that ensued has convinced me it's time to rig my furnace to accept generator power. Since the generator only needs to power the blower and circuit board, it should be sufficient. An initial check with my Kill-A-Watt will confirm my theory. If this is my last post you can assume I electrocuted myself during the attempt. Here's a breakdown of the outage in case you want to imagine how cold my house got.
4:49am - Power flickers and dies
5:17am - UPS powers down server
5:48pm - Power returns, server starts
5:52pm - Power dies again
5:55pm - UPS powers down server
9:09pm - Power returns, server starts
??:??? - Connectivity returns (when you read this)

The imperfect Earth, with it's snobbish rotation, scoffs at our proper time keepeing. Instead of rotating in a consistant manner, it has the nerve to slow down. We just quietly add an extra second every 4 years or so depending on the Earths mood. Of course the slowing may mean the earth will completely stop in a billion or so years. This would extend the day to 6 months instead of 24 hours possibly creating two distinct nomadic societies that constantly travel the earth to either avoid or remain in the light. Your first thought might be Morlock and Eloi but you would be wrong! The correct future non-rotating earth societies would be vampires lead by Riddick, and clones of Wesley Snipes lead by Blade. Throw some Waterworld references in as well since they seemed to be travelling a lot in that movie. Plus Waterworld sucked, so you'll get an idea of how 6 months of darkness feels. Or you could just move to Michigan and find out first hand.

My friend Tim from work asked me what my favorite video game character was a few days ago out of the blue and now I know why.
This morning I woke up to cries of "the internet is gone!" from Lisa. Thinking quickly, I decided the three most likely events that could bring down the internet was a colossal solar flare, multi-targeted thermonuclear attack, or a router worm of untold evil that jams every switch in the world with garbage. Since my alarm clock was still working I ruled out the solar flare, and the lack of zombies ruled out the thermonuclear attack, which left the worm to end all worms as the likely culprit. I sprang into action and retrieved my emergency cash, gold ingots and platinum bars along with my bucket of food and generator, then threw all of it along with Lisa into my truck. Before I could embark on my planned escape route from certain financial meltdown and social chaos my phone buzzed and my heart skipped a beat. Taking it from the holster I was amazed to see my google alert for the HDPC-20 flash across my screen. Daring to hope, I loaded up my mobile browser and was greeted with Google. A few more websites later and I was convinced the internet was alive and well. Running downstairs I discovered that in fact my internet connection was down, not the entire internet. I explained to Lisa that our internet connection is not the entire internet, and asked that in future outages she be more specific about what exactly is gone. Crisis averted, I went back to bed.

I learned the Xeon processors aren't 64 bit, which made the 8GB of memory less exciting, but still addressable. It replaces my PowerEdge 2400 which was cutting edge around 2000 (the new one is cutting edge around 2006) being twice as heavy and almost twice as large. It's also 4200 better. What do I plan on doing with this beast when I'm not serving files for LAN parties? Absolutely nothing, it sucks too much power and nothing I do needs this much hardware. I just like having it close to me, in case I need to start a virtual server farm or local weather modeling.
